Logic 8 has made it easier, to use multi-timbral and multi-output instruments. You no longer need to open up the environment to route and create auxiliary channels in order to use multi-out plugins. This tutorial assumes that you know how to load samples in to Kontakt 3 and assign the sample to the different outputs that are available on the kontakt mixer. I didn’t have time to take screen shots, but I think it is easy enough that it doesn’t need it.
1. Create a new software instrument track by selecting track/new or the plus button on top of the arrange page or key command option-apple-n. When the New Tracks dialog appears, check the multi-timbral box. Logic will automatically select the software instrument radio button and will change the number of tracks to 16. Then select create. Logic will then create 16 tracks on the arrange page. Each track will be labeled Inst. 1 and each will be assigned to a different midi channel for instrument 1.
2. Select the first instrument 1 track and choose Kontakt 3 for the i/o. You will be given mono, stereo, 5.1 and multiout configuration options for the plugin. The reason for this is that the output choice you choose will determine how many auxiliary channels Logic will allow you to create. You can assign any of the instruments to any of the channels. If you make any changes, you will be prompted to reopen Kontakt so that the changes can take effect. The reason for this is because Kontakt advertises its number of outs during instantiation. Therefore it cannot change output configuration during use.
3. Load up a sample or samples and assign them to the midi and kontakt outputs that of your choice Now you can control and trigger kontakt in logic from the corresponding instrument and midi channel.
4. In the mixer view you will only see one channel for kontakt. This channel will only be playing what is coming from output 1 in Kontakt. To see the additional outputs in the logic mixer click the plus (+) button on the bottom of the channel strip that kontakt is loaded on. This will open up an aux channel that will automatically be routed to the next output in kontakt.
5. To automate the kontakt efx and settings you will have to do it from the midi track using midi cc data via the hyper draw.
6. If you want to automate the plugins that are on the aux channel you will need to right click on the channel strip and choose display in arrange page. This will create the corresponding aux track on the arrange page that will enable you to access all the automation that is available for that channel. The only problem with this is that, you end up with 2 tracks for the 1 kontakt track (1 track for midi, 1 track automation). I like to just move the 2 tracks next to each other in the arrange page so I can easily keep track of them.
That is how to use kontakt with logic 8 in a nutshell. There are some more complex issues that can be done and have to be done in Logic while using Kontakt 3, but that is beyond the scope of this tutorial. If you would like those specific issues addressed feel free to kontakt me about it.

Is it possible to freeze the individual midi tracks instead of all the tracks when using kontakt3 as a multi timbral instrument?
